The it colour of the year is making a big impact on the world of interior design! Inject some life into your home during the winter months by adding rich green potted plants to your kitchen, or go bold and include an emerald green armchair to your living room.
Mixing the patterns you use in a space can bring energy and a chic aesthetic to your home. The key is to choose a foundation of colours that tie everything together – then, you can mix-and-match patterns to your heart’s content.
Our go-to colour is taking a back seat to navy this year. Like black, navy accents other tones especially well; however, it’s much less harsh. Navy looks exceptionally beautiful paired with lighter blues and white during the spring and summer months, as it pays homage to classic nautical themes.
We saw butterfly patterns pop up on the runway last year, and now the butterfly motif is ready to have its moment within the home. Sophisticated patterns on wallpaper can breathe new life into a dull bedroom or bath. Typically thought of as a spring trend, take the unexpected approach and combine the pattern with deep hues for a refined approach to fall décor.
Modern, stylish, and sustainable! Cork is a welcomed trend in 2017 that is incredibly versatile. Bring warmth and texture into your home by adding a cork wall into your space. Not only will you be able to endlessly pin whatever you want to it, but it also adds some extra noise absorbing qualities!
Sometimes we just need to get away from our phones, computers, tablets, and TVs – and in the New Year, we’re seeing home designs take a literal approach to this feeling. Create a space in your home that is free from technology, so that you can clear your mind whenever you please. You’ll really appreciate this space during the winter months as we find ourselves spending more time indoors.
Give your kitchen a light and bright upgrade by going all white! Winter will feel less glum with this modern look – plus, Alberta’s sun-filled days are the perfect accent to this airy trend.
Travel trends in design are still going strong, but 2017 will see a vintage inspired look. Think: rustic globes, distressed leather suitcases, and exposed light bulbs – this décor trend is will be a go-to trend to warm up the fall and winter months.
Yes. Terracotta is making a comeback! The Mediterranean-inspired colour is another trend that leans toward bringing warmth and natural materials into the home. From pots to tiles, you’ll find plenty of ways to utilize this earthy tone.
Simple fabric headboards are finding their way back into the bedroom in 2017. Add a touch of luxury to your bed and include this plush feature to your space!

There’s something incredibly chic about an all-white approach to decorating. If you have a home that’s more on the contemporary side, then this might be the look for you! Get inspired by the snow-covered landscape outside and use a white table cover as your base. Add white branches in a clear vase as a beautifully simple focal point, and hang silver and white ornaments for some festive flair. Place a few white candles around the table for a little warmth and instant ambiance.
Transport your guests to a cabin escape with a rustic inspired table setting. A small pine tree with a burlap base offers an ideal anchor for your table’s décor. Skip the expected, and swap candles for empty wine bottles filled with strings of LED lights (Tip: This works best with lighter coloured bottles). If your home echoes the style of forest retreat, this table setting will fit in perfectly.
The holidays are definitely a sweet time of year, so take advantage of the sugary delights of the season and decorate your table with candy in mind. Best suited for a home that features less traditional décor, begin styling your table with a tablecloth in a rich fuchsia tone. Create a candy centerpiece by filling a vase or candy jar with all your favourite colourful sweets – include swirly lollipops, peppermints, and candy canes for some festive flair. And, don’t forget to display your desserts for the evening! Showcase your deliciously sweet eats on tiered platters and get your guests excited about the final course.
Fresh flowers make any dining table (in any home) look fabulous. Go bright and add a bouquet filled with deep pink and red petals to your table – a revamped approach on the traditional. Or keep it classic with white blooms adorned with rich greens. Add some glitz to your bouquets by mixing in a few ornaments in complimenting colours. Finally, tie a few sprigs of baby’s breath around the napkins on each table setting to complete the floral look.
Nothing says Christmas like the traditional colours of the season. Red ribbons and green garland will instantly inject your table with some Christmas cheer. A home that has wood-filled interiors and cozy furniture pair well with this style of table. Add a personal touch and pipe the names of your guests onto gingerbread men to mark their spot at the table.

]]>‘Tis the season for mantel holiday décor! Garland, twinkling lights, and reindeer are sure to be popping up on a mantel near you, but how do you decorate this fireplace frame to last all year long? Our team at Ideal Home Furnishings put together a list of tips that will help keep your mantel looking beautiful for the other 11 months of the year. Your mantel is destined to become a celebrated new focal point in your home once you check out our timeless approaches below!
]]>An artful display
You really can’t go wrong with one beautiful piece of art hanging just above your mantel. If you take this route, make sure the piece is approximately 2/3 the length of the mantel and is something that you will love to see every day. Add some complementing accessories in a similar colour palette for a pulled together look.
Stay stylish with a mirror
If you can’t decide on a piece of art for your space than think about anchoring your mantel with a mirror. A mirror will add depth to your room and depending on the frame you choose, it will also add design flair. Keep the mirror frame colour or finish in mind when choosing any additions to your mantel presentation. Ensuring everything is the same tone will give you the most professional looking results.
The golden rule of three
Whether you are decorating above or directly on your mantel you always need to remember the rule of three. If you’re grouping numerous items together, you’ll want to keep them in odd numbered grouping for visual balance. Think: three frames, three vases, or even a mismatch of accessories – whichever you choose, just make sure it’s a trio!
Add a traditional touch with symmetry
Sometimes a little classic styling is just what a space needs. Decorating your mantel with symmetry in mind will give you this effect. Achieve the look by placing one large element in the middle of your mantel (a large vase or framed piece), then balance it on either side with a few accessories that mirror each other.
Consider going minimal
Choosing to add minimalist décor to your mantel is a great way to keep your space looking modern and clutter-free. If you’re craving some open wall space and a clean finish than this direction is sure to appeal to you. No need for any statement art for this design approach – all you need is a few simple accessories that are placed together and tie into the theme of your space.
Whichever design style you ultimately choose to take, be sure to visit our team at Ideal Home Furnishings to help you find the perfect furniture in Edmonton to go along with it. Our expansive furniture showroom is filled with gorgeous options for your living room, bedroom, and beyond! ]]>Before you start making any decisions take as much time as possible to do your research. Talk to any friends and family that have been through a home renovation and take advantage of the advice they might have. This is also the time to make a list of potential contractors and evaluate their services. Choosing a contractor you feel most comfortable with is your best bet for a successful end result.
Renovation budgets are incredibly difficult to stick to. Giving yourself some extra space just in case an unexpected cost comes up is always a good idea. Also, be sure you know all the costs of the materials and finishings you want to include in your space – there’s usually a big price tag attached to that countertop or lighting fixture image you had clipped from a magazine.
You will most likely go over budget and probably not hit all your checkpoints on your timeline. That’s just something you need to accept. An intensive renovation has a lot of moving elements happening at the same time – if one item is late on delivery then it will cause something to be delayed. Go into your renovation expecting a few hiccups and then you’ll be pleasantly surprised with an error-free experience.
A renovation is a big investment, so when you’re making choices about your final finishes and fixtures be sure you’re thinking about how much you’ll love that feature over the next five years. Choosing something that is super trendy isn’t always the best way to go, and often the most successful renovations feature a more classic and timeless look. Remember, you can always accessorize with less expensive and non-permanent pieces.
Finally, be confident! Just because this may be the first time you’re taking on a home renovation project it doesn’t mean that you don’t have the skill and knowledge to get it done properly. Try not to second-guess yourself on the elements you’ve chosen for your home – this is your space, and it should be a reflection of who you are.

]]>Located on Whyte Avenue, Ampersand 27 presents a gorgeous combination of natural and contemporary style. You’ll find plenty of earthy elements (like wood and stone) throughout the space, but the overall look is fresh and modern. We love the twinkling lights and large sharing tables that give the restaurant an inviting finish.
One of downtown Edmonton’s dining hot spots got major re-vamp after 30 years! The new look of Earls Tin Palace is a great example of how you can make a large space look warm and comfortable without being too traditional. In this case, gorgeous woodwork and custom steelwork seal the deal on a brilliant look.

El Cortez features a hauntingly beautiful design approach complete with candles sitting atop mountains over over-dripped wax. Touches of urban flair mixed with some eye-catching wall art make this spot an exceptional dining escape.
This Edmonton landmark is over 100 years old and is basically a castle right in heart of our city! It’s no surprise that the Hotel Macdonald has swoon-worthy interiors. One of our favourites spots inside this iconic destination is the Empire Ballroom, which opens its doors every Sunday for their renowned brunch. Blush draperies, chandeliers adorned with colourful jewels, and ceiling details that will keep you looking upwards are just a few of the must-see elements of this opulent space.
This is themed décor done right! Set sail on a sea-fueled design adventure and explore the nautical style of Black Pearl. Inside you’ll see spot on accents like a ship’s helm, fishermen’s net, and industrial lighting; however, our favourite detail is the is the old-world map that’s showcased on the ceiling.

Coffered ceilings accented with gold pair flawlessly with chandeliers and give the space a touch of glam. If you’re trying to create an effortlessly cool French look within your home this is definitely a must-visit.

]]>Bedroom
Your larger bedroom is only a few design tricks away! Get rid of bulky nightstands and replace them with one or two floating shelves to keep your space feeling airy. And, don’t use that precious shelving space for bedside lamps. Instead, hang pendant lighting on either side of your bed for maximum efficiency. You can also keep the biggest piece of furniture in your bedroom looking light by replacing a heavy headboard with something see-through like a wrought iron design.
Bathroom
That big, luxurious ensuite is usually something we dream about. If we are lucky enough to have a spacious bathroom in our home, we’re often stuck with a second smaller one. Get the most out these tiny spaces by using a clear glass partition for your shower or sticking to clear glass doors for your tub. If you have the opportunity to change your bathroom vanity than go with a pedestal style that leaves more of your bathroom floor exposed. And, always keep your bath mat stored away unless you’re using it. Having a bath mat on a small bathroom floor will make your floor feel like it has less surface area.
Living Room
One of the best ways to make your living room feel airy and light is to stick to one colour throughout the space and use different shades of the tone. Monochromatic colour palettes don’t only look sophisticated, but they also trick the eye into making a space look much larger. If you have curtains in your living room be sure that they are the same colour as your walls for an uninterrupted presentation, and don’t forget to wall mount your TV – you’ll save yourself some major real estate in your living room by doing so!
Kitchen
To get your kitchen looking it’s most spacious place your focus on the cabinets. Start by painting your cabinets to match your walls. Any stark contrast will only make the area feel stuffy. Take your cabinet revamp a step further and replace solid cabinet doors with glass – even if only replace a few you will immediately feel the benefits of this space-enhancing swap. Lastly, keep kitchen accessories to a minimum, and try incorporating slim-styled seating into your space (think: simple bar stools without a back).

]]>One of the biggest inefficiencies in a home is the energy that is wasted from your furnace working overtime to keep up with the heat leaking out. By ensuring all your windows and doors are properly sealed you’ll save energy and save some dollars on your heating bill.
That leaky faucet is wasting a lot more water than you may think! Invest in making the necessary repairs to stop the leaks, or replace any faulty hardware if needed.
If your showerheads and toilets are ready for an upgrade be sure to look into low-flow options that will help your household conserve water. You won’t even notice the difference!
A super simple way to conserve energy in your home is to switch all your light bulbs to compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) and light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Bonus: these alternatives have a longer lifespan than the traditional style, and you’ll save on your electricity bills.
Another easy way to go green is to limit the use of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in your home. Not only are they bad for the environment, but they can also cause headaches, nausea, and other irritations to the body.
If you are shopping for new appliances keep an eye out for the HE logo. These appliances are Energy Star certified and use less energy.
Another efficient way to save on energy usage in your home is to install a programmable thermostat. Doing this will give you the option to pre-program a cooler temperature for your home’s interior when you are out.
If your attic hasn’t been completed with proper insulation, now is the time to do it! Having a home that has been fitted with proper insulation will keep your furnace from kicking into overdrive when the temperatures drop.
A ceiling fan is a great alternative to an energy consuming air conditioning system. Consider installing a couple in your home before you make the commitment to an AC system.
If you have a green thumb and tend to your plants regularly, then you’re most likely watering your garden often. Cut down on your water consumption by placing a tank/barrel beneath your downspouts to catch rainfall. You can use this water to for garden and ultimately cut down on your carbon footprint.

Swap-out summer items
Just like we store away our shovels and snow blowers at the first sign of spring, fall means that it’s time to put away our sun-loving items. Your patio furniture and all the accessories that go along with it should be stored and labeled so you can easily find them next year. If you have a shed, take full advantage of the extra space and place all your summer toys in there. Your kids’ jump ropes, scooters, and bikes may not seem like they’re taking a lot of space, but you’d be surprised at how much real estate they can take up. Putting them out of your way will help keep you organized and ensure you have easy access to your items that are tailored towards a cooler climate.
Clear flat surfaces
Spend an afternoon clearing all the flat surfaces in your home. Your coffee table, desk, and dressers…these all seem to be our favourite places to conveniently store miscellaneous items. File away important documents and do yourself a favour - shred everything else! Stacks of paper building up over busy summer months spent traveling, or just out and about, can leave you with a lot of extra clutter that will make your space feel busier than it really is. Also, remember that a kitchen table shouldn’t be your filing cabinet. Keep it clear so that it is ready for all those holiday festivities and dinner parties that are fast approaching.
Add hidden storage solutions
The winter season brings along some of our more bulky items. Cozy blankets, extra pillows, and additional indoor entertainment options will begin taking over your living space. Be proactive with keeping your home tidy by incorporating a hidden storage solution into a room that you spend a lot of time in. Think about adding a bench or coffee table with a hollow center to your living room. This versatile piece of furniture allows you to quickly toss your blankets and board games into it – something you’ll be extra thankful for when unexpected company stops by! Your room will be clutter-free in just moments.

]]>Here are five ways to bring minimalism into your home!
An efficiently planned space is an integral component of a well-designed minimalist room. When deciding on the layout of a space be sure to give each piece of furniture plenty of breathing room. The extra space around each element in a room will give you the ideal foundation for true minimalism.
Buying trendy furniture may seem like the best approach when redecorating your home, but this can actually lead to a space becoming dated again in the near future. Instead, stick to classic pieces of furniture that have simple designs and uncomplicated details to anchor your space. Also, try to choose versatile pieces that allow you to effectively use your space – remember, you don’t want too much furniture filling a room and making it feel cluttered!
The plus side of not needing to fill up space with too many elements is that you can invest more into the few pieces you are purchasing. Look for furniture and décor items that are expertly crafted with high-quality materials. A simple wood feature in a room can add plenty of subtle beauty, and the same goes with rich fabrics. Use texture to your advantage here.
One of the biggest features of minimalism is focusing on an uncomplicated colour palette. Using neutrals or taking a monochromatic approach is a sure way to guarantee you’re following this essential step.
Having one piece of furniture or a single décor element as a focal piece in a space will give plenty impact. You can break the colour palette rule here and go with a pop of colour that complements your space but also adds a little bit of intrigue. Think: one red chair in a white room, or an area rug with a splash of colour and geometric design to bring life to a wood floor. However, try not stray too far from the foundation of the design style that you have established in the space. Your focal piece should add visual interest while maintaining the cohesive feel in the room.

]]>Lighting is often an element that is left as an afterthought in a space. Replacing old light fixtures, or adding a table lamp, are fantastic ways to brighten up any space while adding a new and interesting visual element.
Over time, the same image hanging on a wall can become a little lack-luster. Swap out prints or pick up that new piece of art that has recently caught your eye. Looking for something a little more personal? Create a family wall with an assortment of pictures in a variety of frame styles.Install new faucets
Replacing sinks and tubs can be quite costly; however, changing the faucets can give you a less expensive option to getting a more modern look. If you’re making other changes to your home décor, be sure to choose faucets that complement this new style. Otherwise, stick with a clean and timeless look that can work with a variety of designs.
A fresh coat of paint can go a long way. Painting your walls can clean up any wear and tear that is aging your space. Inject a bold colour to a room for a dramatic approach, or skip the paint altogether and go with dynamic wallpaper. Don’t want to commit to changing all your walls? Choose a feature wall and add a bold colour or pattern to it. This is a sure way to increase the sophistication in a bedroom, dining room, or living room!
Replacing the hardware on your kitchen and bathroom cabinets is a money savvy way to update an older feature in your home. Add some shine to your handles or switch up the style of the hardware and you’ll have a noticeable and eye-pleasing result.
Changing the flooring in a home, or even in a single room, is a big investment. Create a similar effect by adding a new area rug to any space! Make a statement in your living room with an exciting design, or take the classic route and choose a neutral tone to cover tired-looking hardwood floors.
Replacing all your furniture may be out of the question right now, but don’t think that adding one statement piece won’t give you a similar effect. A bright armchair that complements your current pieces can breathe new life into your space. Replacing your dining room chairs is a great budget-friendly way to give your dining room a bit of a facelift – keep your table and let the new chairs inject some character.
Trust us, getting rid of the clutter in your home will make a huge difference in the feel of your home décor. Invest in some storage pieces that can double as design elements. Things like a storage bench or stackable shelves can make all that clutter quickly disappear!

By definition, an antique is something that belongs to the past. When you translate this to the world of furniture, it means the piece dates back to a different period. This could be an intricate coffee table that was passed down from your great-grandmother from the early 1900’s. One of the biggest things to note is that a true antique piece hasn’t been changed or altered; therefore, it’s still in its true and original form. What makes antiques so valuable and rare is finding a piece that is still in great shape - that’s when the magic happens!
Furniture that is restored means that it has been brought back to its former or original condition. Translation: the piece has been worked on and brought back to life! There are a lot of different reasons to restore furniture. One reason is that is that certain furniture design or style is hard to find. An older sofa set that features a hand-carved wood detailing is a perfect example of this. The sofa set may be worn-out, but the frame and foundation of the piece are still there. Pieces like this are ideal candidates for restoration. Another reason for the rise in the popularity of restored furniture is the recycling and reusing factor it presents. Instead of tossing something into a landfill, many people would rather give the piece new life. Just like the popular saying “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure” – something someone is throwing out can be restored into a unique and beautiful piece for someone else!
Deciding between antique and restored pieces really comes down to what you are looking for in your home’s overall design story. Cost is also a big factor. Depending on which era it is from and its condition, a piece of antique furniture can be expensive. However, it could also be a great investment! Restored furniture could be less pricey, easier to find, and still provide you with that unique and vintage quality you are looking for. There’s also more of an opportunity to make a piece your own and showcase your personal style with restored furniture. ]]>Picking a theme for a space is a great idea. It helps you stay on track with your purchases and ensures that there is consistency in your home. However, there’s a fine line between on-theme and cheesy! Instead of being so literal with your New York loft style, be subtle and skip the I LOVE NYC printed throw pillows. If you have a lot of space in a room be sure to take advantage of it! Giving furniture room to breathe is something professional designers always try to do. Don’t push your furniture up against a wall; instead let them float in the space. Using this approach to furniture placement will make your room much more dynamic.

The paint colour in a room can either make or break the space. You went through all that effort in choosing the perfect furniture, accessories and artwork – so, why not make sure the final colour on your walls complements everything? Choosing a room’s paint colour should be one of the final steps in the design process. Getting that perfect shade will take your space to the next level.
The key to a professional look in a room is layering. Designers create depth and a cohesive feel throughout a space by practicing proper layering techniques. Bring this into your home by choosing a central colour or pattern from your room’s design. If you have an interesting pattern on your walls pull that into small details or accents throughout the space - think: a few pillows, accent art, or trim on bedding. Be sure not to go overboard with this; you want to keep your layering more understated than in-your-face.
